The Headmaster - Mr G. K. Atkinson
Welcome to the Prince Edward School Website, which I hope will give you a comprehensive view of our school. The school is amongst the oldest in the country and has been on its present site of 60 acres since 1926. We enrol; pupils from all over Zimbabwe and neighbouring countries and are heavily over-subscribed. We are the pre-eminent government school in the country and compete successfully with all schools in the country and regionally. The school attempts to produce a well-rounded individual where each of the boys participates in the Academic, Sporting and Cultural aspects on offer to them. All Form 1 pupils are given a broad base of 10 subjects and choices are made in Form 3 from available subjects for O Level. 150 successful candidates are chosen to study “A” Level from the 16 subjects on offer. The school writes examinations through the local ZIMSEC board, although many candidates also write through overseas examining boards. Some subjects such as Latin are not offered locally and are written through American and UK examination authorities. All boys are taught Computers and write the HEXCO and ICDL Examinations. Prince Edward still has the largest number of Rhodes Scholars from any school in this country and attempts to offer an academic education of a high standard. The sporting history of Prince Edward School is legendary. Without exception every national team has a fair share of its players selected from this school. Our Old Boys have reached fame internationally in so many disciplines and the Whose Who in sport will reveal their roots, be it in Golf, Swimming, Tennis, Rugby, Cricket, Hockey, or Squash to name a few sports. The cultural aspect of the school is flourishing. The Music department trains the popular Jazz, Rock, Marching, and Marimba Bands, which are in great demand to perform locally. There are also 5 Choirs, which perform regularly. It is not unusual for boys in the Music area to receive up to 25 individual Honours Awards in the National Institute of Allied Arts annual competitions. The Bridge and Chess Teams remain undefeated and it is likely that an Old Boy will shortly become the first Chess Grand Master to come from this continent. Public Speaking and Debating nationally, are administrated from Prince Edward and invariably our boys are the winners of national competitions at all levels. There is a host of Clubs and Societies on offer to every pupil to fit their individual interests and talents and they are indeed fortunate that so much happens at the school. Prince Edward hosts many of the National and International events in the country. The week long National Schools Rugby Festival attracts 60 Teams, and is probably the largest event of its kind in the world. National Hockey, Badminton, Music Concerts are some of the events which occur regularly at Prince Edward School. The school is indeed extremely fortunate to be so well facilitated and boasts of having a full range of Academic and Sporting areas, fully staffed Archives, Hospital, Chapel, Boarding Houses, and accompanying large Dining Hall. Parents and Old Boys have contributed generously over generations to provide these material needs for the school, and are still doing so. The National problems of surviving in a hyper-inflationary climate have seriously impacted on this school. Retaining staff and maintaining the infrastructure and teaching aids are the challenges facing Prince Edward and other schools in Zimbabwe. With commitment, hard work, and foresight, we may survive this crisis and go forward to another “Century of Dedication to a Well Rounded Education”. I hope you will see from the following pages our achievements and aspirations.
